Many of the changes brought by version 1.7 of PrestaShop have been made with the purpose of simplifying the day-to-day management of the online store. A lot of effort has been made to increase efficiency when managing products. Thus, their creation and editing process was significantly revamped from previous versions. This guide is written for users of older versions (1.5 and 1.6) who have recently upgraded to PrestaShop 1.7 and may need a bit of help finding their way in the new product editor. If you are completely new to PrestaShop, we suggest reading the official documentation since it covers every aspect in great detail, not just the changes we will focus on below. If you’re still trying to find your way through the new back-office, don’t worry. We have already written about it and hopefully covered everything.

Right on top and divorced from any tab you will find the Product Name field, the drop-down arrow where you can define the type of the product (standard, virtual and package) and the language selector. You no longer have language selectors next to each field where text can be entered, the one on top is global and applies everywhere since this entire section is static and available even if you switch between tabs. Further to the right you have a “Sales” button which is a quick link to the statistics page of this product. “Product List” is a quick navigation option which opens a pop-up that allows you to quickly go to a different products.

One of the first thing you will notice is the reduced number of tabs. From 12 which were standard in 1.6, you will have only 6 tabs in version 1.7. However, if you have modules which provide additional options for your products, you may have 7. All the options are still there but they have been reorganized in order to streamline the product creation process. Can’t find the Combinations tab? In the Basic Settings tab, on the right, you can determine if the product you are creating is “simple” or if it has combinations. If you set it to “Product has Combinations”, the Combinations tab will replace Quantities.

Basic Settings

This is where everything starts. And thanks to the revamp, filling out all the information in this area is enough to get your product published and ready to be ordered. Images are incredibly important for e-commerce so you are able to add them immediately in the Basic Settings tab. Want to update the cover or delete an image? Click on them and additional options appear to set the image as cover, to delete it or to add a caption. Want to reposition the pictures? Just drag and drop!

Slightly below you have two tabs, one for the Summary (short description) and the other for the “long” Description. The Features are next and you can quickly set them right here without having to navigate through different tabs. Below you can choose the Brand or manufacturer. After that, you can set Related Products. This option replaces “Accessories” from previous PrestaShop versions but works in a similar way, displaying these recommendations in a new area of the product page.

To the right you have the option to set the product as “simple” or “with combinations.” As mentioned above, this will decide if the Combinations tab is displayed or if the next tab is simply Quantities. For simple products, a field is available where you can type in the quantity right away.

Next is the product Reference and just below is the Price and Tax Rule. Finally, you can select the Category or categories to which the product belongs. This area replaces the “Associations” tab. To make things easy, you have a search box so you don’t have to open the entire tree to reach a specific category. Want to set the default category? Use the radio button on the right to set one main category. You just realized the product you are adding should be in a new subcategory? You can now create new ones right here, no need to exit the product editor, go to Catalog -> Categories and do it from there. This is one of our favorite new features!

Quantities / Combinations

The Quantities tab retains the same functions from the 1.6 back office but they have been reorganised for efficiency. You should note that if your product has combinations, this tab’s title and options are changed and quantities will have to be entered per combination.

Setting up product combinations has never been easier! As soon as you start typing in the text field, suggestions will immediately appear to quickly help you find the right attributes to create the desired combinations. Alternatively, you have a complete list on the right, similar to the Product Combinations Generator from older versions. Once they are generated, you can set the default using the radio button on the right and you can further customize each one using the edit button (if you want to add specific references, bar code, price & weight impact, associated pictures, etc.)

Shipping

The options here are mostly unchanged from PrestaShop 1.7 but they have been reorganized for efficiency.

Pricing

While you can set the price in the Basic Settings tab, this is the area where you will find all the additional options: Price per unit, Cost (Wholesale Price), Specific Prices and Priorities.

SEO

In this tab you can add the Meta Title, Meta Description and make changes to the Friendly URL. Additionally, this is also where you can set the redirects in case the product is taken offline. To everyone’s joy, now there is an option to have the redirect go to a category besides the previous options of redirecting to another product.

Options

Every other option you know and love but wasn’t covered yet can be found here: Visibility, Online Only Availability, Tags, Condition, Bar codes have been moved here from the “Information” tab in Presta 1.6. Right below are your Customization options, file Attachments and Supplier settings including Supplier Reference, Price and Currency.

Modules

Previously, if you had modules which offered additional options for your products, they would create additional tabs in the product editor. In PrestaShop 1.7 this has changed and now all such addons are grouped under the “Modules” tab. By default you won’t see it as this tab will only become active if such modules are enabled in your store. Choosing to configure one of the modules here will allow you to make the desired changes which will only apply to the product you are editing.
