Spotlight on Corrymoor Mohair Socks

We love local, rural clients and The Blackdown Hills in Somerset is an area we are particularly fond of. Corrymoor Mohair Socks were our first Blackdown Hills client back in 2014.

Five years later and we now also produce work for the Blackdown Area of Outstanding Natural BeautyBlackdown Shepherds HutsBlackdown Chimney SweepBuckland Farm Log CabinsDimpsey Glamping and HiHo Silver to name but a few…

The start of our relationship with Corrymoor was to design a new brand identity. We ended up creating a logo for them which still to this day remains one of our all-time favourite designs. Many new clients have been drawn to it in our portfolio. It has been part of our submission for awards too and we are sure it contributed to us winning Somerset Business of the Year in 2016.

Following on from this logo came business card design, roller banners and stand designs for shows, carrier bags, brochures also an e-commerce website, created by our talented team of Prestashop Developers.

Several Teapotters over the years have been out to the beautiful farm tucked away in the hills. They have exceptional open days too when you can pop over with the family to meet the goats. Steve and Jenny are very welcoming and it is a truly lovely family business.

Here Steve and Jenny tell us a little about the fascinating history of Corrymoor Mohair Socks…

We are lucky enough to live in East Devon in the Blackdown Hills – one of England’s best kept secrets and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We farm 128 acres which is mostly permanent pasture and natural woodland with small fields and many hedgerows. As well as the lovely angora goats which produce the mohair for Corrymoor Socks we have a herd of organic beef cattle. We moved here in 1986 and the farm has been farmed to the exacting Organic standards of the Soil Association since 1988.

We have kept Angora goats since 1986 and have been keen to breed good natured and well framed animals with exceptionally fine, lustrous, kemp-free mohair fleeces. (Kemp is a short thick fibre which makes poor quality mohair itchy). Each year kids are born in February and March. All the goats are shorn twice a year, usually in July and January. The young goats are graded according to the quality of the fleece and body and the best will, in due course, join the breeding flock when they are 2½ years old. Our oldest goats often reach 12 years old by which time they will have contributed 24 fleeces! The very best goats are selected for showing or for selling for breeding stock. Over the years, we have had considerable success in the show ring, including Supreme Champions at the Royal Show, The Three Counties Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, Devon County Show and the Royal Welsh Show. Proving to us that we are producing some of the best goats and finest mohair in the UK.

After shearing, the mohair fleeces are carefully graded to ensure that the correct grade is used for Corrymoor Mohair Socks. We supplement our homegrown mohair with mohair from other British breeders and some fine fibre from South Africa. The mohair is specially selected for its quality and softness, as well as for its strength. The mohair is commercially washed and combed into “tops”, worsted spun (for smoothness and added strength) into yarn. Since 1990 our socks have been expertly knitted for us on traditional machinery in Leicestershire and dyed “in the sock” to produce the distinctive Corrymoor range.

After small beginnings with just four styles of sock and as people “cottoned” on to the AMAZING properties of mohair and why it was the perfect natural fibre for socks, we expanded our range to 14 different styles and over 22 colours. We have now sold over 580,000 pairs of socks and have customers all over the world.

Corrymoor Socks are as versatile as mohair itself. From non-flammable upholstery in aircrafts to the finest spun cool suiting material, from Steiff Teddy Bears to cross-country ski skins and from Navajo Indian horse cinches to delicate lace wedding dresses; the natural wicking properties and extreme strength of mohair combined with its silky soft feel ensures this unique combination of practicality and luxury. Corrymoor Socks combine these properties to provide your feet with the ultimate sock.
